August 28 -- Service night / Gospel of Thomas I hope the start of the semester is treating everyone well. Campus is certainly bustling with activity (for good or ill, depending on your point of view ;-) We have discussed recently the option of taking on more service related activities. Our community is in need of some volunteer labor assembling more of the "activities" packets that were passed out at Mass this past weekend (and will be distributed this weekend as well). So, this week we will spend our hour and a half giving some much needed help to our community. We will keep our regular meeting time (Thurdsay, 8:00pm), but meet at the Catholic Office (G-22) in Anabel Taylor Hall. Kristen informs me that the undergrads pulled through today and finished assembling all the booklets. So, we're off the hook. Instead, we'll have our usual fellowship meeting tomorrow evening (Thursday, 8:00pm) at 410 E. Lincoln St. As for a reading, I'm afraid I don't have time to scan and post something tomorrow. I'll bring photocopies of a short article on either the Gospel of Thomas or the role of deacons in the Church. |

August 14 -- Transforming Our Days This week, I selected a chapter from "Transforming Our Days: Spirituality, Community and Liturgy in a Technological Culture" by Richard R. Gaillardetz. The book looks at "the subtle yet pervasive ways in which technology has reshaped our lives" and "calls for a contemporary Christian spirituality marked by the search for God in our daily engagements." The second chapter, "The Life of Grace", examines two views of the God-world relationship and begins to look at the ways in which Christian theological resources can challenge the negative aspects of our technological world. As usual, the time is 8:00pm Thursday evening at 410 E. Lincoln St. Drop me an email if you need a ride. Hope to see everyone there. Pax. |

August 7 -- Vision Discussion Instead of our usual meeting this week, we have decided to get together and discuss the vision and purpose of the grad group. We feel it is extremely important to occasionally gather and remind ourselves that God has plans for our group and we should therefore take time to discern them. We sincerely hope that many new faces will come to just listen and/or express an opinion on the status of the Catholic grad group. A rough agenda is attached.

July 31 -- Ice Cream Well, it's finally happened -- cloudless sky, rising temps, a week that actually feels like summer! We've been diligent so far this summer with reading and discussing, so I think it's about time for some good old-fashioned summer fun. Thus, I propose a grad group "outing" to Purity ice-cream tomorrow evening. As usual, we'll meet at 8:00pm Thursday evening at 410 E. Lincoln St. and walk down to Purity ice-cream on Rt. 13. Drop me an email if you need a ride. Hope to see everyone there. Pax. |

July 24 -- Is It Too Late to Save the Catholic Church? I hope everyone is staying dry this week, as difficult as that may be. (Being particularly uncomfortable with wet feet, I am going through socks at an amazing pace!) Chris has tracked down a June 30 Newsweek article, titled "Is It Too Late to Save the Catholic Church?" (links below). The topic of the article is Church reform and response in light of last year's sexual abuse scandals. I understand that this could be considered a controversial subject, but, as members of both the Church and an institution of higher education, I believe that we all have the resources (and responsibility) to address these issues. With that in mind, I'd like to make two additional comments. First, the article does not (necessarily) reflect the views of any member of our community; that is, it is a starting point for discussion, not an ending point. Second, the forum for discussion is tomorrow evening's meeting, not this e-mail list. Finally, I'd also like to point you to last weekend's "This American Life" program on NPR. It included a segment on a monk who was sent to problem parishes where priests had been removed because of scanda, where his his job was to come in, keep events from going public and smooth things over until a permanent replacement priest was found. You can listen to the program off the web at http://www.thislife.org under the program "Enemy Camp." I'll also try to bring a tape of the segment tomorrow evening if anyone is interested. As usual, the time is 8:00pm Thursday evening at 410 E. Lincoln St. Drop me an email if you need a ride. Hope to see everyone there. Pax. Is It Too Late to Save the Catholic Church? July 17 -- Tuesdays with Morrie I hope this reminder finds everyone doing well. This week, Barb has provided us with some excerpts from "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom, posted on the website (link below). Consider taking a break from your usual routine and join your fellow Catholic Grads for some prayer and reflection. As usual, the time is 8:00pm Thursday evening at 410 E. Lincoln St. Drop me an email if you need a ride. Hope to see everyone there. Pax. |

May 29 -- Ithaca Festival One of the advantages of being a graduate student at Cornell is being able to take advantage of Ithaca in the summertime. And, what better way to kick off the summer than with the annual Ithaca Festival. In place of our regular meeting/discussion, everyone is encouraged to take some time off to see the Ithaca Festival Parade, Thursday evening at 7:00PM. Everyone is welcome to gather at my place (106 Sears St.) around 6:20 and we'll wander over to find a good place to watch. More information on the parade and the Ithaca Festival is available at: www.ithacafestival.org Also, a reminder to everyone that tomorrow is the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. There will be one Mass on campus at 12:20PM in the Chapel at Anabel Taylor Hall. Pax. |

May 22 -- "The Fifth Mountain" Continuing our "potpourri" theme, this week I'll lead a discussion on an early chapter from Paulo Coelho's "The Fifth Mountain," a fictional retelling of the story of Elijah. The chapter is available off the Catholic Grads website, link below. For discussion, you might consider the following questions:
I'd also like to ask someone to volunteer to provide the reading and lead the discussion for next week. I can post readings to the web site ahead of time if needed. Finally, this week we will be meeting at Theresa's new condo, #15 Penny Lane; directions are below. As usual, we will be meeting at 8:00pm. Drop me an email for a ride. Hope to see everyone tomorrow. Pax. |
