August 27 -- Sin

It's a topic we've brushed up against a few times, but never tackled head on: sin. The reading (see link below) from Rev. Richard P. McBrien's Catholicism consists of three passages on: "Original Sin", "Penance", and "Sin". Touching on some of the issues brought up last week are sections of the third passage on "Freedom and Responsibility" and "The Capacity for Sin". It should be an interesting discussion.

We'll meet at 410 E. Lincoln St. on Tuesday at 8:00 pm. As always, everyone is welcome. And, while the grad picnic next Sunday will provide a venue to officially invite new members into our group, please pass along a warm invitation to any new grads in your department, apartment complex, etc. Hope to see you there on Tuesday. Pax.

P.S. As we move into the fall semester, we're soliciting suggestions for a fall topic. We generally focus on a book for the majority of the semester. In the past, we've read Henri Nouen's The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming and Ignacio Larranaga's The Silence of Mary. If you have a recommendation for the group, please let me know.

August 20 -- Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

Since everyone seems pretty hectic at the end of the summer, this week we'll simply take a look at next Sunday's readings. The website of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops includes daily readings online; the link to the Sunday readings is below. We'll really return to our "regular" time and place: 410 E. Lincoln St. at 8:00pm on Tuesday. Join us for some low-key fellowship and reflection. Peace.

We will be meeting on Tuesday at 8:00pm. Anyone who needs a ride, please let me know. As always, everyone is welcome. Hope to see you there.

July 30 -- Ice Cream

It's hot. And, by my count, we've had three straight weeks of actual religious discussions. And, it's hot. And, due to unforseen circumstances, our scheduled leader for this week won't be able to make it. And, 410 E. Lincoln is in a period of transition as people move in and out. And, did I mention, it's really hot.

I think the solution to all of these problems is pefectly obvious -- Purity Ice Cream!! So, let's meet at 8:00pm at 410 E. Lincoln (drop me a line if you need a ride there) and we'll head out from there.

Hope to see everyone there.

And remember: Life's Short. Eat Dessert First!

July 23 -- A Word About Praising

Hope everyone is surviving this heat wave! Laura Boyd (with an air conditioned apartment!) has offered to host and lead this week's Catholic Grad Group; 8:00pm as usual. She's provided us with one of C.S.Lewis' _Reflections on the Psalms_, titled "A Word About Praising." There is a PDF version available on the web (see link below). If anyone needs a ride up north to Laura's, let me know. As always, everyone is welcome and we hope to see you there for an evening of fellowship.

For directions, contact Laura

July 16 -- Psalms

We will be holding our regular grad group meeting this week on Tuesday at 8:00pm at 410 E. Lincoln St. (Finally, back to normal!) Also, we'll be bidding adieu to Amy, who, after a successful thesis defense two weeks ago, is off to *gasp* the real world. Please join us for fellowship and farewells.

In other news: On Wednesday, there will be a trip to the Mount Saviour Monastery for night prayer. Meet in the Anabel Taylor Hall parking lot at 5:15pm. We will stop for dinner before night prayer and return to Ithaca by 9:45pm. One or two additional cars for the trip would be appreciated.

Theresa has graciously agreed to host and lead this week's Catholic Grad Group. We'll get a second chance to hear her Alumni Weekend presentation on loss/grieving/death. From her previous announcement: "Obviously, death is not the only thing we grieve in this life, so regardless of your experience with losing loved ones through death, I'm sure that you would gain from the insights I share as well as the reflections of others gathered." We will be meeting on Tuesday at 8:00pm at Theresa's apartment. (Note the different meeting location!!).
