May 15 -- "The Examined Life" I really liked all the book suggestions that people had a few weeks ago on Matthew's "potpourri night". I'd be interested in reading a chapter or small part of several of the recommended books, and Matt and I were thinking that it might work well this summer, given people's irregular schedules and the warm weather-mandated trips to Purity, Doug's Fish Fry, and the mini-golf place, if we continue with the "potpourri" theme instead of trying to stick with just one book. For tomorrow night, I'll provide a very short chapter from the book, "The Examined Life," by Robert Burns. The chapter is entitled "A Yellow Ribbon for the Red-Blooded Catholic," and discusses how we, as individuals, identify ourselves to the rest of the world as Catholic. There's no reading beforehand--the chapter is short enough to read out loud tomorrow night (8:00pm, 410 E. Lincoln). I'll also try to prepare a few questions to help stimulate an engaging discussion. Finally, we'll need to identify someone to provide the reading and lead the discussion for the following week, so be thinking of what you'd like to have the group read and discuss (Matthew can post readings to the group web site if needed). Peace |

May 8 -- Night Prayer Seems like "for a change of pace" is becoming the norm for the group. This week we thought we would get away for a little and attend Night Prayer at Mt. Saviour Monastery. We'll meet in Anabel Taylor Hall parking lot at 5:30PM, get dinner in Elmira, and join the monks for prayer at 8:15PM. (We'll probably try to do a quick dinner in order to get to the monastery a little early to see the over 200 newborn lambs!!) We should return to Ithaca by 10PM. (For those who can't quite make a 5:30 meeting, but would like to join us for prayer, drop me an e-mail and I will send you directions to the Monastery.) Hope you can join us. Best of luck to everyone who is taking finals! Pax. |

April 24 -- Potpouri First of all, Happy Easter to everyone!! The semester is winding down, Slope Day is just over a week away, and assignments are piling up like mad. Take a break from it all and join us for a little fellowship, this Thursday at 8:00pm at 410 E. Lincoln St. This week, it's a bit of "potpouri" -- please bring a good book that you would recommend to the group (not necessarily as a book for the group to read together, but something you've enjoyed and would like to share) and maybe choose a representative passage to read. In keeping with Catholic fellowship, I'd suggest "spiritual writings", but take the broadest possible definition of that term. As always, drop me a line if you need to coordinate a ride. Pax. |

April 10 -- Triduum Here is your timely reminder that the Catholic Graduate Fellowship Group will be meeting tommorrow (Thursday, 8:00PM at 410 E. Lincoln St.). Since we are between books (and if anyone has a suggestion for the next book, please let me know) and we will not be meeting next week, it was suggested that we prepare ourselves for the conclusion of Lent by looking at the Easter Triduum. I've collected two reflections on the Triduum and made them available off the Cornell Catholic Grads website (links below). Take a look at them if you have the chance; or consider taking some time to reflect on your past experiences of the Easter Triduum and how you might deepen your experience this year. I'm sure that everyone is slowly stressing as the end of the academic year approaches. Please join us for fellowship! As always, drop me a line if you need to coordinate a ride. Pax.

March 27 -- Following the Rich Young Man Here is your timely reminder that the Catholic Graduate Fellowship Group will be meeting tommorrow (Thursday, 8:00PM at 410 E. Lincoln St.). This week, we will be concluding "Following the Rich Young Man" by Robert E. Meagher. The last chapter in the book is Chapter 6: Joy, but if anyone would like to bring up any of the topics covered previously, please feel free to do so. Remember that Josh has been kind enough to scan and host a PDF copy of the book: http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/jtp29/ftrym.pdf Feel free to drop me a line if you need to coordinate a ride. Pax. |

March 20 -- Rosary for Peace Whatever one's feelings are on the morality of the current conflict, I believe that we all share a feverent desire that it ends swiftly with the safe return of all soldiers to their homes. Tonight we will join together to pray the Rosary. It seems appropriate to pray for peace, justice, and a quick resolution to the war. As always, 8:00pm at 410 E. Lincoln St. Email me to coordinate rides. Pax. |

March 13 -- Following the Rich Young Man Here is your timely reminder that the Catholic Graduate Fellowship Group will be meeting tommorrow (Thursday, 8:00PM at 410 E. Lincoln St.). After a few weeks respite, we will be returning to "Following the Rich Young Man" by Robert E. Meagher. I seem to recall that our last discussion focused on Chapter 4: Community, so let's take a stab at Chapter 5: Fairness. Of course, if anyone missed reading or discussing any of the previous chapters and wants to bring up some points there, by all means do so! There are a lot of ideas packed into this little book, and I suspect we are only just scratching the surface. Also, I'll remind you that Josh has been kind enough to scan and host a PDF copy of the book: http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/jtp29/ftrym.pdf Feel free to drop me a line if you need a ride. Pax. |

February 20 -- Contraception - Why Not Just a quick reminder that the Catholic Graduate Fellowship Group will be meeting tommorrow (Thursday, 8:00PM at 410 E. Lincoln St.). As Marc mentioned, we will be spending the next two meetings discussing contraception and the Church's teachings. In particular, we will be listening to a tape by Janet Smith entitled, "Contraception - Why Not." For anyone who misplaced the link to Dr. Smith's article: The Connection between Contraception and Abortion Hope to see everyone there for a what is sure to be an informative and interesting discussion. Drop me a line if you need a ride. |

February 13 -- Following the Rich Young Man The Catholic Graduate Fellowship Group will be meeting tommorrow (Thursday, 8:00PM at 410 E. Lincoln St.). We will continue reading "Following the Rich Young Man" by Robert E. Meagher. Since we never got a chance to discuss Chapter 3 (and some people mentioned not having had the opportunity to read it), we will be discussing Chapters 3: Vision and 4: Community. We had a very interesting discussion last week, so please consider joining us for fellowship, even if you don't get a chance to read. Looking ahead: in anticipation of a presentation on natural family planning on Sat. March 1st at Anabel Taylor Hall, Janee Picconi has suggested that we spend a couple of weeks listening to and discussing an audio tape titled "Contraception: Why not?" by Janet Smith. Janee's recommendation: "it is really a RIVETING presentation and a very compelling argument against contraception...it ties in to many other aspects of our lives and culture, history and how contraception has changed our society and us." So, mark your calendars for this special topic on Feb. 20 and Feb. 27. (And, of course, the presentation at ATH on March 1.) |

February 6 -- Following the Rich Young Man Is everyone enjoying the balmy 20F temperatures this week? And the bright and shining sun this morning? The Catholic Graduate Fellowship Group will be meeting tommorrow (Thursday, 8:00PM at 410 E. Lincoln St.). We will continue reading "Following the Rich Young Man" by Robert E. Meagher, and we will be discussing the Chapters 2: Peace and 3: Vision. I believe that Josh still has some copies available, so contact jtp29 if you would like to get one. As always, please come by and enjoy some fellowship, even if you don't get a chance to look at the text. We had a very fruitful discussion last week, and this week promises to be just as good. Also, remember that registrations and deposits for the "Over 21" Weekend Spring Retreat at Mt. Saviour Monastery are due by next Wed. (Feb. 12) in the Catholic Office. For those of you who have never been to Mt. Saviour, it is a truly remarkable oasis of quiet, solitude, and spirituality. You can see pictures from last year's retreat on the Catholic Grads Website: http://www.cs.cornell.edu/People/fluet/CatholicGrads/pictures.html . You can also check out Mt. Saviour's website: http://www.msaviour.org. |

January 30 -- Following the Rich Young Man I hope that everyone's semester is off to a good start. Don't let the cold weather get you down -- the temps might actually get above freezing this weekend!! The Catholic Graduate Fellowship Group will be meeting tommorrow (Thursday, 8:00PM at 410 E. Lincoln St.). Josh has provided copies of "Following the Rich Young Man" by Robert E. Meagher, and we will be discussing the Introduction and Chapter 1: Leisure. I believe that Josh still has some copies available, so contact jtp29 if you would like to get one. As always, not finishing the reading before the meeting should never discourage anyone from attending. Once again, I'd especially like to invite any graduate students who have been considering giving the group a try to do so in this new semester. It is truly a gift and blessing to be able to take time each week to reflect on our faith with fellow members of the community. Also, a reminder that Kim will be taking donations of clothes, furniture, household stuff, academic stuff, computer stuff for her friend David and the other families who's apartments burned down over the winter break. |

January 21 -- Ecclesia in America Welcome back to Spring 2003 (at least that's what Cornell is saying; the weather outside begs to differ). I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing break. The Catholic Graduate Fellowship Group will be meeting for the first time this semester tomorrow (Tuesday, 8:00PM at 410 E. Lincoln St.). Doug pointed us to the article "Ecclesia in America: Reform, Renewal and the Role of the Laity in a Time of Turbulence" (link below). Please join us for an interesting discussion. As always, reading before the meeting is purely optional. I'd especially like to invite all the graduate students who have been considering giving the group a try to do so in this new semester. (Really, how much work could you possibly have on the second day of classes!) The group consists of about 15-20 graduate students and young professionals who meet each week to share fellowship and to help each other grow in understanding and faith. Finally, one bit of admistravia. After this week's meeting on Tuesday, we will be moving the weekly meeting to Thursdays (same time: 8:00PM, same place: 410 E. Lincoln St.), for a change of pace and to accomodate the requests of those who can't make Tuesdays. |
