Lectures

In an attempt to provide a steady structured approach to this class for those who want it, lectures with powerpoint handouts will be given for the first 4-5 weeks, in Olin 255, Tues and Thurs, 4:25PM, BEGINNING 1 SEPTEMBER.

The room holds only 200 people; ~450 are signed up for this class.

The lectures will parallel those in CS1110, which covers the same material, although we will be able to cover more here and go into more details because everyone has some programming experience. We expect students who take this route to attend regularly and complete the course within the first 5 weeks.

We expect those who come to attend regularly, every lecture, and do the assignments on the deadlines that we give you later.

You can see the videos of lectures in CS1110 from fall 2010 on www.cs.cornell.edu/videonote. Click "Click for Cornell" in the upper right corner, give your Cornell netid and password. This semester will follow the same lecture sequence, essentially, as last semester.

We will not schedule regular discussion sections; in the past, they have not been attended well at all.

Quizzes

Please complete quiz 0 on the CMS for the course. Please take the other quizzes in the ACCEL Lab during the times that a consultant is there (see below). Unless the consultant is busy, it should take you 5 minutes to take the test and 2 minutes for the consultant to look at it and tell you the result. These quizzes are used just to ensure that you know some important concepts and definitions.

Lab

There is one "lab", which will show you how to read/write files on your hard drive. When you have done it, show the results to a consultant, who will look at it and then change your record to indicate that you have done it. See below for the times that the consultants are available in the ACCEL computer labs.

Computer labs

The ACCEL Lab, reached through the Carpenter Library.

Consultants will be present in the GREEN ROOM to answer questions, to grade assignments, and to give and check quizzes at the times listed.

The times given as "Lab" are the labs for CS1110; they are not for CS1130 students. The times that don't say "Lab" are times at which the consultant will be in the green room, to help as indicate above.
