Typography

Since the last few people who heard this immediately asked, ``What is typography?'' here is my definition today: Typography is the art of printing and everything that goes with it, from font design to book design, from punchcutting to PDF. Because of the abundance of tools for desktop publishing in the past fifteen years, there has been a profusion of poorly designed documents in our lives, and most of us have become desensitized to them.

If you want to read only one book about typography, read Bringhurst's book (cited below). You'll be amazed at how much you took for granted before.

My typesetting engine of choice has been TeX since before I entered college (I don't use a word processor), and in recent years I've been exploring the depths of LaTeX to produce higher quality documents and presentations.

Classical Music

I've been playing violin (with varying commitment) since the fifth grade, and I participated in the Everett Youth Symphonies until I graduated from high school. I was a member of the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra while I was in Baltimore, and I recently joined the Cornell Chamber Orchestra. I really enjoy playing in ensembles, so contact me if you want to get a group together for fun.
