CS/CIS530 S04: Architecture of Large-Scale Information Systems

Announcements

This page contains all CS/CIS 530 announcements, most recent first.

05/17/04: Take-home: there were two errors in the equation in Problem 3c. They are fixed here. Note in the pessimistic case (which you have to do) there is a cost of one round-trip to unlock and release an object even if the transaction chooses not to update it. My apologies.

05/16/04: The entire take-home is now posted.

05/13/04: The take-home final is not completely ready, but if you are eager to begin here at least is Question 1. The remainder will be posted tomorrow morning.

05/10/04: Note every replicated table in the Oracle databases should have a primary key column, as described here.

05/06/04: Notes from Adrian on creating a script to enable replication are here.

05/06/04: The Advanced Replication Documents refered to in Lecture are here.

05/04/04: Due to a suddenly-scheduled appearance before an Associate Provost committee, lecture is canceled today. Thursday’s lecture will be a wrapup and discussion of the take-home.

05/04/04: Here is more information about project demos.

04/26/04: If you have not yet done so, please sign up for a project demo on the sheet posted outside Upson 4115.

04/15/04: Please submit a brief status report in CMS.

04/15/04: Prelim grades really are available on CMS, and comments on the graded submissions really are in CMS, but in a non-obvious place: Navigate to the prelim. You should see a score there. To see the comments, expand the regrades button and download the comments file. Some people are having trouble with the line separators on the comment files; we are looking into this.

04/14/04: Prelim grades are available on CMS. Comments on the graded submissions are in CMS. Here is the grading guide.

04/06/04: An Oracle database client for Windows is available.

04/01/04: Due to a minor emergency last night lecture today is cancelled. As it is so late, I shall show up in class to announce this fact.

04/01/04: Prelim grades will appear in CMS before this weekend. A grading guide will be posted on the website.

04/01/04: Some links to help with J2EE connections to the Oracle servers and with the Registry Server.

03/30/04: Accounts on the Oracle servers: if your group wants one, see Adrian during his office hours (Tues 2:30-4:30) to get an account id and password.

03/17/04: Due date clarification: it is the midnight that occurs between Friday 19 Mar and Saturday 20 Mar.

    03/16/04: Here is the prelim.

03/09/04: Next part of project assignment here.

03/04/04: Proposed prelim: an open-book, open-notes take-home exam to appear on the course website just before class on 16 March, due in CMS by midnight 19 March.

02/24/04:Nearly all comments on project descriptions have been emailed.

02/19/04:Comments on project descriptions will be emailed to you over the next few days.

02/13/04:A sample “project concept” document for the WebVan site is available here.

02/12/04:The CS/CIS 530 newsgroup is now available, rather before I expected. It is “cornell.class.cs530” (note “cs”, not “cis”). Please use the newsgroup to find project partners.

02/12/04:The Course Management System (CMS) is available here. You should have SideCar credentials before connecting. Student documentation for CMS is here. The assignment for project description submission will be opened today, due Tues 17 Feb.

02/03/04:Both textbooks should now be on reserve in the Engineering Library.

01/29/04:The Bernstein and Newcomer text [BN97] is now on reserve in the Engineering Library. The Web Services text [ACKM04] has not arrived yet. So much for Amazon’s one-day shipping.

01/29/04:CIS Courses. Here are descriptions of three CIS courses. Right now these courses have VERY low enrollments, and I've been asked to help drum up some interest by an announcement.
