Project Ideas

  1. Sustainability Forum
    1. Create an online forum for Cornell students to share and discuss sustainability related research and ideas (something like the AASHE forum http://www.aashe.org/forums )
    2. A Cornell student started this project last year, but graduated before finishing. We are trying to get her files as a starting point.
    3. ColdFusion or Ruby on Rails are options
  2. Package of Cornell Sustainable Campus Living Laboratory Widgets
    1. The newly redesigned Cornell Sustainable Campus website will be launched this fall. It includes visual “bug” that appears throughout the site and, when clicked, opens a modal window explaining the Living Laboratory concept with links to more information. Living Laboratory is the moniker for the concept that unifies the four arenas of sustainability efforts at Cornell: Research, Education, Campus Sustainability, and Engagement. The LL Bug is envisioned for use (in lieu of a “web ring”) on all Cornell sites/pages having to do with any of these four arenas (with support from University Communications, Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future, and the Campus Sustainability Office.
    2. This project entails packaging up the bug and modal window info such that it could be used across programming languages, platforms and browsers, including social media connections (maybe something like the embed code for online video sites?). Ideally, we would be able to manage the modal window content as it appears across all sites where the LL Bug is used from one central place.
  3. Sustainable Campus App
    1. Research current popular web/mobile apps. Based on research findings, propose and create an app with a Sustainable Campus theme that could be used as an education and outreach tool.
  4. Windows mobile platform compatibility components for the Cornell Sustainable Campus website
    1. Create components needed to make the newly redesigned Cornell Sustainable Campus website compatible with Windows mobile platforms (currently, it will not function on them at all). It is written in Ruby on Rails and has many cool features (including responsive design, dynamic content, and significant social media integration).
