Readings

There is no required reading for 5150. However, there are many good books, articles and websites on software engineering. If you pursue a career in software you will want to read these resources at some point.

The Mythical Man-Month is the undisputed classic of software engineering books. Some of the details are out of date, but it has some great writing on important themes.
The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master is full of practical advice for working programmers.
Code Complete: A Practical Handbook of Software Construction is a condensation of a large body of research and experience on everything from coding conventions to system architecture to project management.
Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams is unfortunately still on my to-read list, but I have heard many enthusiastic endorsements. It covers the human side of project management.
