What is NETwork Against Malaria?

NETwork Against Malaria is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization begun by my four sisters and I in conjunction with a good friend Michael Mujule from Uganda. Mujule built several schools in the poorest parts of Uganda. The students in his schools often missed 60 days a year with malaria causing deaths and many students to drop out of school--relegating them to a life of poverty. Malaria is the number one cause of child death and preventable absenteeism from school in Uganda. The goal of our organization is to promote health and education in Uganda by providing free malaria nets (ITNs) to school-age children.

We began our organization in 2007. We have raised over $100,000, provided over 12,650 ITNs, started chapters in over 15 states, and received help from over 30,000 students. We have been recognized by Nestle, Ralph Lauren, Disney, and Build A Bear.

We Need Help Raising Awareness:

App design-We want to create a "deliver the bed net to the village app". The target audience would be children and anyone interested in Ugandan animals. There are no such apps currently available. People who downloaded the app could select be the person on the We are very open to suggestions and other ideas.

The goal of creating the app would be to raise awareness and funds for our organization. Our current goal is to raise funds for 30,000 students in the 50+ schools run by one of our volunteers in Uganda. We have already distributed 6,000 nets.

What will the computer scientist get in return...

We are a very small nonprofit. We have no paid employees (other than the fees we pay the accountant to file our taxes), so over 98% of the money that we make goes directly toward purchasing ITNs for kids in Uganda. We are the only nonprofit in Uganda targeting malaria in this age group, so every $10 you make buys a net--a net for a child who would not otherwise have one. The kids we work for are so poor that they sleep on the floor with their siblings, so 3 children can sleep under 1 net, so $10 really can change the lives of an entire family. Our volunteers on the ground say that malaria is the greatest problem in the area that we serve, and it is the first step toward helping these kids escape poverty. Of course, we can't do it without the generous support of people like you.

We don't plan on making money off the app. Of course, you will receive credit for designing the app, the title of Technology Intern from a National nonprofit, and any successes that may come from the app.
