General Background

The Cornell Cup USA presented by Intel competition creation team last year proved that they could create some of the most exciting robotics designs in the world. And they did it at the same time while empowering college teams from other top schools such as Berkley, MIT, UPenn, Purdue, Columbia and many more to create their own embedded systems. With more colleges hoping to take part, more companies looking to join as sponsors this year (and even Bill Nye the Science Guy looking to get involved) this year the team aims to expand and refine the existing ModBot (Modular Robotics Platform)

This Year’s Project

This CS5150 project will be focused on the development of an adjustable GUI system that is a part of the ModBot system. The initial adjustable GUI system was developed last year to a very positive reception and this year we aim to increase the functionality while producing an engaging video game-like demonstration of a classic tanks and jeep game.

The game should highlight many of the adjustable GUI’s features, including standards like buttons, sliders, drop down menus, and health bars, while also representing the actual pseudo-omni directional rovers (tanks) and dune buggy rovers (jeeps) being developed by the rest of the robotics team. A working version of some of the standard elements has already been developed and presented but we are looking for ideas on improvement and for additional new features. We are looking for ways to communicate sensor information to the user and for ways just to make the game “fun” to entice people to use our system. Knowledge of robotics systems is not required (although it’s a great way to meet some talented robotics people) and successful completion of this particular project will focus just on the GUI and game elements.

Work will be featured at the Walt Disney World as part of the prestigious national competition, the Cornell Cup USA presented by Intel.
