Many educators and service providers across NY State are actively involved in developing programs that leverage the new medium of Virtual Worlds to engage students in a wide variety of learning opportunities. One node of this community is focused in the Greater Southern Tier, but reaches across Upstate and out onto Long Island. It brings together school districts, regional service providers, two and four-year colleges and universities, and museums in a broad P20 initiative. We are gathering for a day of demonstrations and discussions as we explore opportunities to extend and strengthen this community and to support these activities in the long and near term.
Demonstrations will focus on programs developed through partnerships with Cornell University’s SciCentr outreach program over the past ten years. We will feature examples supported by the NSF-funded WITS (Worlds for Internet Technology and Science) project. Additional presentations will include the 6th Grade CyberCiv Social Studies partnership with Elmira City Schools and smaller projects in Rochester and Troy. We will also discuss the range of available technologies and their application to education, presenting the outcomes of the recent NSF-funded Taxonomy of Virtual Worlds workshop.
All participants are invited to end the day by attending the:
Southern Tier SciFair
Spring 2009 Showcase

Everyone is invited to stay and join the Showcase celebration for the Southern Tier SciFair middle school teams at Wings of Eagles Discovery Center at the end of the day. Take the time to see firsthand the excitement generated and the impact on learning made by putting the medium of virtual worlds in the hands of the learners. Talk with teacher/coaches, college mentors, teens, and families about their experiences and explore the many worlds they are creating this spring.
