Black History month - Feb. 2003

It's that time again... to give mad love and respect to our brothers and sisters of color in the shortest month of the year (just kidding! :-) So here's my second annual tip of the hat to Black Americana (and if you missed last year's, it's still online.) This year's theme, chosen by The Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History is "The Souls of Black Folk: Centennial Reflections".

1960, Chicago: MLK leading a demon-stration demanding a strong civil rights plank in the GOP campaign platform.

Did you know?...

February was chosen because it is the birth month of
Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Encarta's coverage of Black History month

Network for Good's coverage of Black History month, links to the NY Public Library's Images of African Americans from the 19th Century and a website on the history of Jim Crow laws.

CNN's coverage - lame! :-) Absolutely nothing about the struggle, except for one off-site link to Life (look for it in the lower right hand corner) to MLK (picture at right.)

The History Channel's going with coverage of personalities mostly (heavy emphasis on performers and sports figures), but also a link to a Roots exhibit. Also, you can still listen to a recording of MLK's "I have a dream" speech.

National Geographic has a site dedicated to the Underground Railroad.

also, check out my links to MLK-oriented sites... and i'll have more as the month progresses.

1958: MLK is arrested for "loitering" in Montgomery, Alabama, and was subsequently manhandled by police.
