Elevating and expanding Bowers' leadership in research.

The Research Office works to elevate and expand research and position Cornell Bowers as a global leader in computer science, information science, statistics, and data science research. The office supports research initiatives across the college by promoting, developing, and collaborating with internal and external partners.

This includes:

  • Coordinating new research initiatives
  • Collaborating with the Office of Vice Provost for Research and Innovation (OVPRI)
  • Expanding the college’s engagement and research leadership
  • Working closely with OSP PRO and SRAC
  • Managing Ph.D. fellowships and awards

Our major duties involve strategic partnerships, proposal development and undergraduate research.

Meet the team.

The Research Office helps Cornell Bowers faculty develop their research proposals. Different from the duties and responsibilities of OSP PRO - the Research Office can write (non-technical sections), edit, and provide guidance on all aspects of a research proposal. For large, collaborative proposals, the Research Office can also help manage the proposal team. We also provide and continuously update the many proposal resources.

The Bowers Undergraduate Research Experience (BURE) matches Cornell Bowers CIS undergraduates to faculty mentors for a paid research experience. BURE is an incredible opportunity for undergraduates to gain new skills and explore what research is all about. The Research Office runs this program along with faculty leads from our three departments.

Proposal Process

This process reflects the updated proposal submission policy for Cornell researchers, effective January 6, 2026.

If you plan on submitting a proposal, please contact the PRO Team by filling out the proposal notification form as soon as possible and at least 15 days before the due date. Best practices are to submit requested materials as soon as you can ahead of indicated deadlines.

  • Pl submits the PRO Team proposal notification form with required information including:
    • Sponsor Name
    • Link to the proposal guidelines.
    • Screening questions for required research approvals
  • For proposals responding to opportunities announced less than 15 days before the deadline, notify the PRO team immediately when you learn about them.
  • PIs that miss the 15-day deadline may still submit their proposal to PRO at least 10 days before submission for a LIMITED review; see Proposal Submission Policy for details and limitations. Not recommended.
  • Pl works with the PRO Team to start drafting a budget.
  • Pl gives final approval to the budget.
  • Pl works with PRO to finalize all required personnel documents.
  • If appropriate, PI and the PRO Team work together to set up the proposal in the sponsor's submission system.
  • Pl sends all final administrative content and a draft of the research content to PRO for a FULL review.
    • All required elements of the proposal must be present
    • Technical documents can be early drafts but must include all required sections

PIs that miss the 5-day deadline may still submit their proposal to PRO at least 3 days before submission for a LIMITED review; see Proposal Submission Policy for details and limitations. Not recommended.

  • PI sends final research content to PRO.
  • The PRO Team works with OSP to submit the proposal.
  • Pl is available all day for immediate response in the event of any submission hiccups.
