Overview

Practicum is centered around open projects that are to be complete in groups over the course of the semester. Practicum will not meet in person as a class every week, but you should meet regularly with your group members to make progress, and we will ask you to check in with course staff throughout the semester. We will meet as a class a few times: once at the start of the semester to introduce the course, once near the middle of the semester to present project 1, and once at the end of the semester to present final projects.

The "Project Inspiration!" page was put together by the staff that taught practicum for the last few years. Use it for inspiration on possible things to work on.

Project 1: Getting Started with a Chosen Platform​

Your first project will involve choosing a platform, language, or toolset, and learning enough of the basics to create an initial project. A major objective of project 1 will be to formulate a more ambitious plan for project 2, and to teach us enough about your chosen platform that we can help you work out reasonable goals and expectations.

Do that more ambitious project, and meet goals and expectations.

AI Policy:​

The biggest rule is to be transparent about how and where you are using AI. This means documenting how you use it. We encourage you to even document the exact prompts that you use.

One place where you are NOT allowed to use AI is for writing the reports that we will read to evaluate you. The reason for this is simple: you would be wasting the staff's time. You can use AI to check your grammar or suggest different phrasing, but if you turn in AI slop for a report, it will not go well.
