CS 114 - Unix Tools - Fall 2004

Announcements

2 Nov: If you've already submitted Assignment 4, you are welcome to resubmit up to the deadline on Friday. I will grade the last submission before the deadline. Read the description of the error messages carefully.

1 Nov: Assignment 4 correction: To submit, run the script ~cs114/bin/submit-hw4, not cs114/bin/submit-hw4. Note the leading tilde.

1 Nov: I'll hold office hours this Tue 4:15-5 and Wed 4-5 in 4112 Upson. You can pickup any uncollected assignments then.

22 Oct: I will be out of town all next week (23-30 Oct), so office hours are cancelled. I will have office hours, as usual, on Wed, 3 Nov. Assignments 1-3 will be available for pick-up then.

22 Oct: If you didn't hand in any of the earlier homeworks, you have until 5 Nov to do so. They won't be averaged into your grade directly, but doing them may help nudge your final grade up from a U to an S.

20 Oct: The last assignment is due Fri, 5 Nov.

15 Oct: I will hold additional office hours Tuesday, 19 Oct, 2-3pm in 4112 Upson.

13 Oct: Assignment 3 is due Wed, 20 Oct.

6 Oct: If the submission script reports your shell as /bin/csh even if you've chshed, you need to logout, then log back in. It can take a few minutes for the chsh to take effect, so you might get logged in with your old shell at first. The script checks what shell you logged in with, not what shell you're currently running, so just invoking the new shell from the command line will not work.

4 Oct: The second assignment, due this Friday, is ready for your efforts. Enjoy!

4 Oct: Notes from lecture 4 are up early on the schedule page.

4 Oct: I've swapped the next two lectures (after today's): job control and redirection will be Wednesday, regular expressions Friday.

1 Oct: Notes from the first three lectures are linked off the schedule page.

29 Sep: Notes from the first two lectures are linked off the schedule page.

29 Sep: If you're having trouble connecting to turing and get a "key exchange failed" error, your SSH client is probably out of date. ADM know about the problem, and are working to install a newer version of the client on all the lab machines. You can install the new SSH client yourself by running:

    \\crane\ntfiles\SSH Clients\SSH Secure Shell\SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9.exe

You can also connect to babbage, another Unix host, using the old client.

27 Sep: Notes from the first lecture are linked off the schedule page.

27 Sep: Based on my sense of the first class, I've adjusted the schedule by compressing the first part of the course in order to accomodate another lecture at the end on shell programming.

27 Sep: I have updated the instructions for connecting to turing.

27 Sep: The add/drop deadline for the course is Oct 4. Since it's now after the usual add deadline, to add the course, you must do so manually; get the form from the registrar.
