Quality of Service for Communications Networks

The first area of fundamental importance for the software infrastructure in this project is that of low latency, guaranteed quality end-to-end communications. Several research groups in the CS and EE departments at Cornell are investigating questions in this area. Von Eicken is providing high-performance networking for user-level programs via U-Net. Keshav is developing protocol stacks that can allocate different qualities of service to connections, both for ATM and for IPv6. Hemami is addressing the special requirements of visual communications over heterogeneous networks.
