The picture has been corrected in the assignment write-up. The corrected picture also appears here.

3/20 R CS101J now? Engineering students are required to take CS101J (Transition to Java, 1-credit, self-paced). By now, you have enough programming knowledge and experience to take CS101J if you want to. Taking it now means that you would be able to take ENGRD/CS 211 in the fall 08 semester (without taking CS101J during summer session). To take CS101J now, submit a petition with an add/drop form. The forms are available at Engineering Advising (OH167) and major offices (e.g., CS office in UP303). Prof. David Gries, who is in charge of CS101J, will sign the add/drop form, and your advisor will sign the petition. Prof. Gries has office hours T 12:45-1:45. For more info go to the CS101J course website: http://courses.cit.cornell.edu/cs101j.

P1 Hint Question 2: You do not need any sophisticated built-in functions for root finding! The question asks your script to perform one of two actions: print "monotone" or print the values of the roots. You know how to program this selective behavior. You also know how to do all the required math! The derivative of a cubic (you can do this) is quadratic and has two roots. The quadratic formula has a part called the discriminant that identifies whether two roots are real and distinct. If you need a reminder, take a look at the notes from Lecture 2--there is an example there of the use of the quadratic formula.
