Please look at the CS100J newsgroup often in the next week, as people start working on the first assignment and have questions. Feel free to ask and answer questions, but of course you are not supposed to post Java code for the assignment on the newsgroup.

Below, we give information on getting on to the newsgroup.

If you are using Microsoft Outlook Express.

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook
  2. Click Tools.. Accounts..
  3. Click the News tab
  4. Click the Add button on the right
  5. Click on News..
  6. Enter your name
  7. Next Enter your email address
  8. Next Enter newsstand.cit.cornell.edu as the news server
  9. Check the box which says My news server requires me to log on
  10. enter your id and password
  11. Click on Finish
  12. newsstand.cit.cornell.edu will appear on the left window pane of outlook. You receive a dialog box asking you to download newsgroups. Click Yes.
  13. Once it downloads, enter cs100j in the text box.
  14. Click the cs100j newsgroup and click the Subscribe button and click OK.
  15. The newsgroup appears on the left window pane. Click on it. You should be able to see messages in the
    main window.

On a Macintosh. Get bear access (look at CIT's web page). Start up file Bear Access ƒ/MT-NewsWatcher/MT-NewsWatcher and click around (read the stuff for Microsoft outlook express, above).
