CS100J uses a Cornell newsgroup for discussions among students and staff about the course —assignments, prelims, questions about course material, etc. Students are expected to look at the CS100J newsgroup at least once during the first week. Every student is responsible for information that is posted there by the CS100J staff, although we will send you really important messages through our course management system, the CMS.

If you know all about newsgroups at Cornell, then open your newsgroup reader and add Cornell newsgroup

cs100j      or      cornell.class.cs100j

to the groups that you read regularly. If you don't know anything about newsgroups at Cornell, then begin learning about them at this website:

http://www.cit.cornell.edu/services/netnews/

After reading that page, click on "Thunderbird" in the righthand column to open a page that tells you how to download the newgroup reader Thunderbird. Thunderbird is supported as part of the Cornell package of services called Bear Access, which you may already know about. Below is more information on adding CS100J to your newsgroups.

Newsgroup etiquette

1. Check the newsgroup before asking any questions via email or in the newsgroup, since the question you had may have already been answered. If we get questions via email that many are asking, we will post the answer in the newsgroup so everyone can see it.

2. Feel free to post general questions on lectures and course information, general homework questions, and any questions you have about review material. These will be answered either by a CS100J staff member (Gries or a TA) or by another student.

3. Do not post homework solutions and specific approaches you are taking to solve homework problems. Questions of that nature should be asked in office hours or emailed to the course staff.

Make sure to take advantage of the newsgroup whenever you can!

Adding CS100J to your newsgroup

After you have opened application Thunderbird, do the following.

1. Click on "Cornell Newsgroup" in the left column of the Thunderbird window.

2. On the right, click on "Manage newsgroup subscriptions.

3. In the menu that pops up, type in "100j" in the field labeled "show items that contain".

4. Select cornell.class.cs100j.

5. Click button Subscribe.

6. Click button OK.

You can now click "c.c.cs100j" in the left column. You will be able to see all messages and post your own messages.
