"The goal of this competition is to advance the state-of-the-art Autonomous Underwater vehicles (AUVs) by challenging a new generation of engineers to perform realistic missions in the remote underwater environment"

Our project is part of the 3rd International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition sponsored by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) and the US Office of Naval Research (ONR), in conjunction with the "Unmanned Systems 2000" Symposium. The competition, held in July 2000, takes place at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida.

The mission involves designing and building an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) that finds and retrieves an object using light and sound sources for tracking. More specifically, our AUV must find a ring positioned next to a pinger and a flasher somewhere in Lago Dorado. The pings and flashes occur at unknown frequencies, so the AUV must determine the rate at which the pings and flashes occur. Finally, it must retrieve the ring, surfacing after it does. These tasks must be completed within the allotted 30 minute time limit.
