The Southside Community Center, local residents, community agencies, and several staff, students, and faculty members from Cornell and Ithaca College are in the planning stage of a community–based computer lab for Southside neighborhood youth and young adults.  This effort will address the “digital divide” by providing computer access for homework help, to instruction from basic keyboarding to 3-D animation and programming.  Youth will be encouraged to participate in every aspect of the planning and implementation
process including lab set-up and maintenance.  Other program areas that are being explored are computer training programs for teen parents, and special job placement and/or internships and micro-enterprise training for more skilled participants.  In addition, other community organizations including Ithaca’s Sciencenter are creating or already have operational labs.  The possibility of building a city-wide consortium in the future with these other entities is being explored.
