Introduction

This is the final project for CS415 Practicum in Operating System. The purpose of the project is to get student hand-on certain components of operating system (File System) by using Java programming language. The file system concept was inspired by WinNT file system (NTFS). Moreover, I have added some features such as symbolic/hard link, accessed time stamped and defragmentation of the harddisk.

Design

The file system is one of the most critical parts in the operating system. If other application happened to be buggy, worst case reboot the system would certainly help getting the system back to consistent stage. However, if file system is buggy, this may result in reseting the whole harddisk which is very unacceptably costly.

NTFS is the file system that was created specifically for WinNT operating system. For this project, the simplified version was being used. The main components of file system are Master File Table and Free Space Manager.

Master File Table contains maps all file logical blocks to physical blocks. Free Space Manager manages and optimizes the free space usage.
