<P>
The 5th International Workshop on Thermal Field Theories and Their
Applications was held on August 10 - 14, 1998, at the University of
Regensburg, Germany. A three-day introductory <a href="tft98school.html">summer
school on thermal field theories</a> took place on August 5 - 7, 1998,
also at the University of Regensburg.
<P>
As the previous workshops in this series (Cleveland 1988, Tsukuba 1990,
Banff 1993, Dalian 1995), this workshop focussed on formal developments
and applications of field theories at finite temperature to many areas
of physics, ranging from Bose condensates of atoms at ultralow temperatures
via the physics and equilibration of quark-gluon plasmas in relativistic
heavy-ion collisions to baryon number violation in the electroweak phase
transition in the early universe at ultrahigh temperatures. Reflecting
important developments in the last three years since the previous workshop,
more weight was given this time to pre-equilibrium and non-equilibrium
aspects. The meeting was attended by over 100
<A HREF="participants.ps">physicists from
all over the world</A>.
<P>
I would like to express my sincere thanks to Randy Kobes who wrote the
TFT98 home page (http://theory.uwinnipeg.ca/tft98.html) and other web
software which was invaluable for the workshop preparation.
<P>
Many thanks go also to Mrs. Christine Leichtl and Mr. Franz Stadler as well
as to my colleagues and our students for helping in preparing and running
the workshop.
<P>
The final workshop program arose as a result of intense consultations with
the members of the <a href="OC_IAC.ps">International Advisory Committee</a>
and the <a href="OC_IAC.ps">Organizing Committee</a> whose valuable advice
is deeply appreciated. The talks were selected from nearly twice as many
submitted abstracts. Some of the contributions which were not selected for
oral presentation were presented in a
<a href="schedule.html#posters">poster session</a>.
<P>
The <B> <a href="schedule.html">proceedings</a> </B> of the workshop
consist of a set of links to the Los Alamos e-print archive which can be
accessed from a second page by clicking <a href="schedule.html">here</a>.
Not all speakers submitted a written version of their talks for the
proceedings. Those which I received were submitted to a strict peer
review procedure. The active (highlighted) links provide access to the
finally accepted written contributions.
<P>
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to
those organizations who gave us financial and/or logistic support:

For those who wanted to get some basic background in thermal physics, prior
to the TFT98 workshop, on Wednesday - Friday, Aug. 5-7, 1998, a small
Summer School was held at the University of Regensburg to serve as an
introduction to thermal field theory. The lecturers and topics covered were
as follows:

<P>
The Summer School was sponsored by the Graduiertenkolleg Regensburg-Erlangen
on "The Physics of Strong Interactions". Participation was free of charge.
Its main purpose was to prepare the graduate students in this "graduate
college" for the TFT98 workshop, but the Summer School was widely
advertised and also drew many outside students as well as a number of
participants of the TFT98 workshop the following week. Altogether 45
students from all over the world participated. Many thanks to the three
lecturers for their excellent lecture series!
