1 pound diced beef
5 cups beef broth
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 medium onion, chopped
1/8 teaspoon pepper
2 cups sliced carrots
1 cup sliced celery
1 cup diced potato
2/3 cup pearl barley

In a soup kettle, combine beef, broth, tomatoes, onion, and pepper; bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat: cover and simmer for 1 1-1/2 hours or until meat is tender. Add barley. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Add potatoes, carrots, and celery; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 30 minutes or until barley and vegetables are tender.
