February 2: Enterprise Information Architectures (Contd.), Data Modeling

Required readings:

• Mike Stonebraker. Too Much Middleware. Sigmod Record, Volume 31, Number 1, March 2002.
• BEA Systems. BEA WebLogicŪ Server 8.1 Overview. Do not worry if there are many acronyms that you do not understand, just get an idea of the capabilities of a modern application server.
• Browse the website of the Transaction Processing Council, and read the overviews of the TPC-C, TPC-H, TPC-R, and the TPC-W benchmarks (do not read the full benchmarks).
• Gary Burgess. What is the TPC Good For?

Optional readings:

• Jim Gray and Richard Waymire. SQL Server Megaservers: Scalability, Availability, Manageability. A marketing paper for Microsoft SQL Server that nicely explains some of the performance issues and hardware trends faced by today's database systems.
