The VLDB Journal Special Issue on Data Stream Processing

Traditional data management systems are based on persistent data and transient queries. However, many application domains face the opposite scenario, in which streaming data is compared against continuous queries. Example scenarios include retail transactions, ATM and credit card operations, financial tickers, instant messaging systems, news feeds, software logs, network router logs, and sensor networks. In these scenarios, data arrives in high-speed data streams and needs to be processed online, often without the luxury of storing the data and answering queries over a unified, persistent data image.

The VLDB Journal will organize a special issue on Data Stream Processing to be published as the Second Issue of 2004. We invite original and high quality submissions addressing all aspects of data stream processing. Topics that are of interest include but are not limited to:

• continuous query processing and optimization over streams
• stream summarization, lossy compression, and approximation
• dataflow architectures for continuous queries
• continuous data mining of streams
• data integration and data fusion for streaming sources
• availability and scalability for continuous query systems
• scalable trigger/alerter systems
• distributed querying and summarization for streaming sensors
• real-time network monitoring
• combined processing of streaming and stored data sources
• event log management systems
• continuous query languages and semantics
• document brokers and information dissemination
• content-based routing for data streams

Paper submission

Authors should email their full paper in electronic format by October 17, 2003 to either of the two guest editors. The review process will be handled electronically. Papers should be in PostScript or PDF version. Standard VLDB Journal instructions for authors applicable for everything (EXCEPT the fact that electronic submission is required for this special issue). Details are available at:
