Fred Schneider, the Samuel B. Eckert Professor, was awarded the 2018 Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing for his 1985 paper co-authored with his then PhD student Bowen Alpern "Defining Liveness." The award is presented by the Association for Computing Machinery and the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science, and is given to authors of outstanding papers on the principles of distributed computing. The presentation will be made at the Principles of Distributed Computing conference in July 2018 at Royal Holloway College in London.
