Paper Title:
Multimedia Storage Servers: A Tutorial
Authors:
D. Gemmell, H. Vin, D. Kandlur, P. Rangan, L. Rowe
Main Point(s):
The paper gives an overview about how continuous media(CM) has brought
the need of significant changes of design to the multimedia storage
servers. If multimedia applications are to be successful, fundamental
changes must be made with respect to real-time issues: expanding services
supported by OS and network; real-time storage and retrieval; high data
transfer rate and large storage space; redesigning user interface
for interactivity. The paper also analyzes issues and gives suggestions
to disk scheduling, balancing round length and latency trade-offs, buffer
management, admission controls etc.
Possible Use(s):
A tutorial to multimedia storage servers; issues and problems to
think about on designing real multimedia storage servers.
Extensions:
Provide more detailed guidance for building multimedia storage servers, such
as evaluation of different approaches.
