Paper Title:
Psychophysics and Modern Digital Audio Technology
Author(s):
A.J.M. Houtsma
Main Point(s):
The paper describes a new digital audio technology MUSICAM (Masking-pattern Universal Sub-band Integrated Coding And Multiplexing) which is still
under development. MUSICAM reduces bit rate without loss of sound
quality by the help of phychoacoustics. The perceptual sound quality can
be achieved by the reduction of redundancy and irrelevance.
The sound quality are tested by perception experiments.
Possible Use(s):
MUSICAM can be applied to digital audio applications that need low-bit rate without loss of sound quality, such as DCC and DAB. It provides a reliable source
of information for rational decisions when trade-offs have to be made between
perceptual quality, technical feasibility and costs. It is also a good model
for future development.
Extensions:
Propose a standard audio coding that has high sound quality but low bit rate
sampling.
