An Operational Measure of Information Leakage in Side Channels

Abstract:

I will describe a new measure of leakage in side channels that is supported by a cogent operational interpretation. I will describe various properties of this measure and compare it with existing secrecy metrics, arguing that, in the context of side channels, mutual information underestimates leakage while local differential privacy overestimates it. I will also describe mitigation strategies that minimize this metric.
