“The Official Free Food (Only) GroupMe” is Cornell’s GroupMe chat to advertise and distribute free food left for the taking. The posts are put up by members of the chat to advertise where and what food is available.
This application has numerous benefits. It curbs food wastage and allocate resources more efficiently, helping those who would like the food and letting them have it at no cost, while helping the environment by avoiding the waste of already prepared foods.
The current version of the the Free Food GroupMe has many flaws but still has approximately 4700 members. The most serious flaw is that more often than not it becomes hard to follow, as there are a lot of posts and no way to filter them. People tend to mute the notifications. With just a picture, and not much of a description of the food, it is difficult to see all the posts let alone see if they meet the dietary requirement for individuals.
The goal of this project is to create a new and improved version of Free Food Groupme. Initially it will be used at Cornell, but there is great potential to create an app that will be widely used at universities and colleges.
This will be a mobile application that will have the same idea as the Free Food GroupMe, but will have customizable features per user. The main page will be a feed: anytime someone uploads the extra food, they will tag the post with three things:
Once this is complete, their post is uploaded on the main feed. Users will have the option to turn on notifications for every post, or only if it meets their dietary needs, or only if it is within a certain distance of their current location, or some combination of them. Once people are at the location and see the food has been gone, they also have the capability to close out the post. This is a real-time application that will be deployed once finished.
This will start as an IOS application. The first iteration will be as simple as possible but should have location services, a main feed page and the ability for users to make a post.
