Project Context

Soumitra Dutta is the founder of the Global Innovation Index (GII) research. Started 10 years ago, the GII has evolved into the leading global assessment of national innovation competitiveness and performance. Today the GII is co-published by Cornell University, WIPO (the Geneva based UN Agency on global patents and innovation) and INSEAD (a leading business school based in France/Singapore). As outlined in the attached document, the GII is routinely referenced by leaders of the nations (such as the Prime Ministers of China and India) and is used by the governments of dozens of countries around the world to design and assess their national innovation strategies. More details on the global innovation index can be found on the website: https://www.globalinnovationindex.org/. A mobile app also exists for the GII on both the IOS and Android stores.

Project Summary

The main goal of the project is to create additional analysis and visualization tools for users of the website of the GII.

There are two parts to the project:

  1. Benchmarking: There are a few other global indices which are also popular and commonly used, such as
        http://www.doingbusiness.org/
        https://www.weforum.org/reports/the-global-competitiveness-report-2017-2018
        http://hdr.undp.org/en/content/human-development-index-hdi
        http://knowledge4all.com/WorldMap3.aspx?languageId
        http://www.oecdbetterlifeindex.org/#/11111111111
It would be useful to benchmark these and other global indices and see what kind of tools and visualization tools exist and which ones may be potentially useful for the GII.

  2. GII data analysis tools: A functioning website exists for the GII (see link above) with some basic analysis tools. It has been created and is maintained by a company called Stratagile in Singapore. The core of the project would be to propose and implement a few important data analysis tools that can be added to the GII website. Note that this phase will need coordination with colleagues in different international locations including WIPO in Geneva, Switzerland and Stratagile in Singapore.
