Ratings and Review System of the Library's Video/DVD Holdings

The goal is to test the utility of social navigation in a library setting.

The Cornell University Library has over 12,000 video and DVDs in its collections, which are all electronically cataloged and accessible through the Library catalog. The goal is to be able to incorporate a version of social networking software into the way users find items from this collection. The library would like to create a separate database populated initially through an extract from the catalog with the video/DVD holdings, which will offer patrons the opportunity to rate movies and provide reviews (similar to Netflix but on a much smaller scale). The database will have to synch with the catalog periodically in order to be updated with new acquisitions. It will employ a star ranking system that would allow for public display of cumulative rankings in real time. It will also store reviews contributed by patrons but for privacy reasons will not track individual users.

In addition to the database, the project team will be expected to build a public interface and an administrative module which allows for review deletion, etc. by authorized staff.
