Ringtones

The aim of this project is to create a database and web site to provide downloaded ringtones to cell phones. The ringtones would be based on natural sounds in the wild, such as bird calls, crickets, running water, and other sounds that capture the beauty of the natural environment. The idea from the perspective of the client is to find an outlet for the multimedia research in the Department of Natural Resources and to create an alternative to the songs that are popular as ringtones today. Additional support for this project will come from the Laboratory of Ornithology and Verizon Wireless.

The project requires building a web site where customers can browse various ringtones and hear them online. A database of ringtones will have to be created. A procedure for creating ringtones will have to be researched, as well as bandwidth issues, ringtone duration, copyright usage, and the conversion to mono, polyphonic and true tones that are usable in modern phones. Some type of shopping cart is needed so that users can download and pay for the ringtones of their choice. Verizon has agreed to provide technical specifications.
