Critique 1
Claire's Grading Guide
Every critique was looked at by one TA (Kiri: red ink; Alin: blue pen)
and by me. My comments (like Kiri's unfortunately) are written in red ink. We'll use different colors next time.
I signed my name to my comments wherever there was an ambiguity.
I assigned the final grade for the critique (check, check+, check-).
Alin's Grading Guide
I used blue pen to grade the critiques. The meaning of the signs I used on the right side
of the text are:
- Square: irelevant part or summary of (parts) of paper
- X: Missunderstanding or confusion of some sort
- Check: Interesting, justified remark, good point
- Triangle: Interesting but not properly justified remark
- ?: Strange remark
- Circle: Strong, unnecessarily critical tone
- Inverted triangle: Wrong or distorted conclusion
Where I used two signs the first reflects the dominant characteristic and
the second a mild influence in that direction. For example "Square Check"
means mostly irelevant (or summary) but with some good points.
Ocassionaly I included comments in the form of observations. The critique
should be marked at least at the paragraph level (usually at subparagraph
level). The demarcation signs are approximative (I might have missed or
added a line).
Kiri's Grading Guide
My comments are written in red ink.
My grading for this critique was simple: each check mark in the margin
means that you made a good, analytical, supported observation about
the paper. I may have also included some commentary in response to
what you wrote. Summary: getting check marks is good. An absence of
check marks is bad.
Reasons you may not have gotten check marks:
- Irrelevance:
In some cases, students made well-supported points that did not
directly relate to the Fayyad et al. paper. Although laudable in
their execution, these sections did not receive a check because the
purpose of the critique is to identify strengths and weaknesses of a
specific target.
- Absence:
In other cases, students simply did not make any analytical
(supported) points. Some students devoted a lot of space to
summarizing the paper. While providing some context for your comments
is useful, a summary is not the same as a critique and doesn't yield
insight as to your analysis of the paper.
