CS 4414/5416:
Systems Programming
Lab 3: Process Registry
2026-09-11
Lab Logistics Reminder
Primary goal: Work together on something
- Fine to have small groups (up to 4)
- Grab a question sheet per person (as in lecture)
- Work on the lab assignment during the hour
This week is still about practicing Rust (and extends lab 2).
Practice Topics
- The NewType idiom
- Understanding module use in tests
- Trait implementation
- Error handling
- Iterators
- Packaging with
cargo
Getting set for next week
- You should get yourself set up with GCP credits (see Ed)
- I recommend you use your Cornell Google account
- We will primarily be running GCE instances
- On your own (or if you finish early), try the quickstart
- Choose a cheap instance type initially
- Remember to shut it down at the end!
- You can
ssh into these or use the cloud shell interface
Getting the material
Repo: https://github.coecis.cornell.edu/cs4414-f26/lab-03
At the end of the hour run cargo package and submit the crate file as a group on Gradescope (I will only grade on the correct file type, not whether all tests are passing).
Question sheet at the end of session:
- What questions came up in the hour?
- What Rust topics are you worried that you might not have practiced enough (between labs, P1, in-class questions)?
