"Well Known Game Designer Shares Insights at Cornell University and Ithaca College" Ernest Adams, an independent game designer, writer, and teacher, working with the International Hobo design group, will present "The Future of Computer Entertainment, 2005-2050" on Wednesday, October 5, 2005, from 5:30-6:30 in room B17, Upson Hall. The free lecture is presented by the Game Design Initiative at Cornell (GDIAC) and is funded by several groups at Cornell, including the Faculty of Computing and Information Science, CIT, and the Department of Communications, as well as Ithaca College's Roy H. Park School of Communications. The event is open to the public. Registration is not necessary. Adams' lecture will discuss advances in computer entertainment that will take place on three major fronts over the next half-century. These fronts are technological advancement; demographic and market changes; and aesthetic development of the medium. This lecture examines each in turn, highlighting the key changes that we can expect to take place and how they will affect the way we make and sell interactive entertainment. Adams will also present a game design workshop, from 9:00 to 11:00 at Ithaca College, in Park Hall, room 220, and again from 2:30 to 4:30 at Cornell, in Upson Hall, room 111. This workshop is designed for faculty, staff, and students who are familiar with games and are interested in the design process. To register for the free workshop, please email Kelly Patwell, patwell@cs.cornell.edu, or Melissa Gattine, mgattine@ithaca.edu. "The information will be relevant for anyone doing or contemplating game research and education," said David Schwartz, computer science lecturer and director of GDIAC. "The workshop will offer a way to get a "snap-shot" of game-design education and share the flavor of what we do, including introducing the process by which we teach the design and analysis of games." Adams has been in the game industry since 1989 and is the author of two books, Andrew Rollings and Ernest Adams on Game Design, with Andrew Rollings, and Break into the Game Industry: How to Get a Job Making Video Games. He was most recently employed as a lead designer at Bullfrog Productions on the Dungeon Keeper series, and for several years before that he was the audio/video producer on the Madden NFL Football product line. He has developed online, computer, and console games for everything from the IBM 360 mainframe to the Playstation 2. He was the founder of the International Game Developers' Association and is a frequent lecturer at the Game Developers' Conference. His professional Web site is at http://www.designersnotebook.com .
