Karl-Heinz Steffens was born in Trier, Germany. His first engagements were in the opera houses of Kassel and Frankfurt and from 1989-2000 he played as Solo Clarinettist in the Bayerischen Rundfunk Orchestra. Since 2000, he has served as Solo Clarinettist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Karl-Heinz Steffens has appeared as a soloist under conductors Lorin Maazel, Colin Davis and Kurt Masur. He is a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Scharoun Ensemble and regularly collaborates with different chamber music groups such as the Auryn and Fine Arts Quartets. He has appeared in various chamber music and orchestra festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, the Pacific Music Festival, the Salzburg Festival and the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival. Karl-Heinz Steffens holds a professorship at the Hanns Eisler Conservatory in Berlin. He has made his conducting debut with the Georgian Chamber Orchestra, the German Chamber Academy, the Munich Radio Orchestra and the Orchestra “Bruno Maderna” in Forli. His numerous recordings include a wide repertoire and include the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, and works for clarinet and chamber ensembles.
