CS 3410 Newsgroup

Settings

Thunderbird settings

Some students have had luck with the Thunderbird newsreader, following these instructions:
File-->New-->Other Accounts
Newsgroup Account, Next
Type name/email, Next
Server is newsstand.cit.cornell.edu, Next
Type some sensible name for the account, Next, Finish

Here's the tricky part!
Right click the account you created, choose Settings.
Go down to Server Settings, and change the Connection Security to SSL/TLS.
Right click on the account again, subscribe. In the search box, typing
in 3410 should do it.

Notes

Do not use any of the newsgroups containing the numbers 314, 316, or 3420. They are obsolete, or used for the ece version of the course, ece3140 (crosslisted as cs3420).

You will need to get a newsreader and configure it. For Windows or Mac, CIT has some dated but possibly useful instructions.

For Linux, you might try Pan as a newsreader, which requires stunnel4 for the SSL connection (see instructions).

CIT newsgroups might only work from secure campus networks, e.g. RedRover Secure rather than the public RedRover network.
