hrönn brynjarsdóttir
welcome
my name is hrönn brynjarsdóttir and i am a phd student in information science at
cornell university.
news
i will be doing fieldwork in iceland in the summer of 2009!
iceland, in addition to being my home country, is an interesting
location to examine the relationship between technology and culture for
the fishing industry. an island nation, we have depended on the
sea for centuries, and it is not about to change very soon.
as we get more and more efficient with technology, however, the
dilemma icelandic fishermen now face is overfishing and how to sustain
their livelihood.
research
i utilize ethnography and critical technical practice to gain a
deeper understanding of how technology and culture intersect in our
lives. in particular, i am interested in the uptake of technology
as it pertains to occupational identities of fishermen and how this is
reflected in the practices and values of the members of this profession.
affiliations
i am a member of the culturally
embedded computing group run by prof. phoebe sengers,
who also
happens to be my advisor.
