Hi! I am Hao-Chuan, or simply Hao. I will soon become an assistant professor at National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan (NTHU, 國立清華大學) (starting February 2012). I completed my Ph.D. in the Department of Information Science, Cornell University (2008-2011) with emphasis on human-computer interaction (HCI). Prior to NTHU and Cornell, I studied and conducted research at several institutes, including the School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University (2006-2008) and the Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica (2004-2006).
My main research interests include social computing (e.g., computer-supported cooperative work, computer-mediated communication), applied machine learning & language technologies (e.g., using text classification to predict knowledge status and creativity), educational technology (e.g., computer-supported collaborative learning, intelligent tutoring systems), and cognitive science (e.g., language use, creative thinking). My work encompasses components of understanding (behavioral science studies) and problem solving (technical design). I value theoretical and empirical understanding of human behaviors in technological contexts. I am particularly interested in putting such understanding in action, using computing techniques to address problems identified by behavioral studies and designing tools to actively transform social and communicative processes.
I also maintain a general interest in other interdisciplinary issues situated in the broad intersection between computer science and social sciences, such as the information processing aspect of cognition and interpersonal communication, cultural differences and its implications to technological design and adoption, societal and legal issues involved in the production and use of digital information, and the sociology of technological construction and use.
Specific projects that I worked or am working on recently include Active CMC Systems, Computer-Mediated Intercultural Collaboration, and Computer-Supported Creativity (see research description for more information).
