Gilly Leshed

I am a postdoc research associate in the Information Science program at Cornell University, working with Prof. Phoebe Sengers . I received my PhD at Cornell in Information Science in the Summer of 2009. My Bachelor's and Master's degrees are from the Technion - Israel Institution of Technology in Industrial Engineering and Information Management Engineering, respectively. I also worked several years in the industry as an HCI expert for commercial flight-deck avionics system and command and control systems for military purposes.

I am currently working on a new project that looks into the culture of overwork and the role of technology in mitigating and/or encouraging practices of overwork.

My dissertation work included research and design of interactive systems that facilitate collaboration and communication among users. My dissertation research involved understanding the dynamics of feedback provided by and through technology to team members. I designed GroupMeter, a system to help teams reflect on their behaviors and to support research into fundamental issues of feedback, language, and teamwork process. I also ran empirical studies to understand the interactions between social processes in groups, their behavioral manifestations, and technology.

New Stuff

November 2009: An article in the New Scientist magazine cited me on the research I did on interacting with the environment while using in-car GPS in relation to a dashboard robot-head driving companion developed in MIT: Robot driving companion brings emotion to navigation by MacGregor Campbell.

October 2009: Another article, in the Canadian magazine The Walrus, cited me on my work on in-car GPS interactions: Global Impositioning Systems: Is GPS technology actually harming our sense of direction? by Alex Hutchinson.

June 2009: I successfully defended my dissertation on June 19. This is what Wordle.net produced when I dumped all the text from my diss into its word cloud engine: dissertation words.
