EXPERIENCE 08/97 - present  M.S. student, Dept. of Computer Science, Cornell University,
                           Cornell Networking Research Group

02/99 - present Effect of Network Load on Internet Service Quality
Focusing on two important Internet services: web browsing and voice over IP,  we study the effect of network load on service quality for QOS provisioning via:
  * a testbed consisting of network simulator, web traffic generator, real web server, and real Internet telephony
     application.
  * studying the interaction between layering protocols and improving their collaboration.
  * improving adaptive schemes at the end-systems.

08/98 - 01/99  BGP Extensions for Differentiated Services
Studying routing support for the differentiated services architecture, we  proposed QOS extensions to BGP, the interdomain routing protocol of interest.  Together with the OSPF extensions, the QOS-aware BGP protocol can be deployed to form the basis of the upcoming QOS-sensitive Internet architecture.

09/97 - 12/97 Teaching assistant for Introduction to Theory of Computing

01/98 - 05/98 Teaching assistant for Computer Graphics

05/98 - 08/98    Internship, software engineer,  Siemens Pyramid Technology Inc.
As a member of Generic OS group, I was involved in
    * fixing OS bugs related to file system reported by customers
    * attacking a cache performance degradation problem for one OS release
    * porting Vxfs2.0 to 64-bit file system to be used in a new 64-bit OS.

05/95 - 06/97    Master Student,  Dept. of Computer Science, Tsinghua University
Thesis Project: Fault-tolerance Mechanism for Workstation Cluster
Built a fault-tolerance subsystem for workstation cluster:
   * on top of PVM, and application-transparent
   * using checkpointing and rollback recovery protocol, achieved consistent  and online failure recovery of parallel applications on system failure

08/90 - 06/95    Undergraduate, Dept. of Computer Science, Tsinghua Univ.
Dept. of Economics & Management (minor), Tsinghua Univ.
Thesis Project: Simulating Communication Mechanism of Workstation Cluster
Built a simulator for the message-passing communication in workstation cluster to test the performance of a new network interface design.

Thesis Project(minor): Technical Analysis Software for Stock Market
Developed a software which provided a group of technical measures for effective analysis and prediction of stock markets, with a GUI similar to commercial products.

SELECTED COURSE
PROJECTS
08/98 - 01/99  Voice over IP
Experimenting using Internet for telephony, and applications that straddle Internet and the telephone network:
   * big project of 20 people, 10 subgroups
   * including data exchange, signaling, gateway, directory service, pricing, and various applications such as voice
email, whiteboard and multiparty audio conferencing
   * our data exchange subgroup focused on efficient voice packet transfer on Internet using forward error correction
      and adaptive playout
   * using ping statistics, we simulated and analyzed performance of FEC and playout algorithms on Internet paths of
different delay and loss rate characteristics
   * our group also served as management group responsible for scheduling, coordination and integration

01/98 - 05/98  Extensible HTTP Browser
Incorporating J-Kernel, a capability-based protection mechanism in Java, into Mozilla (Netscape) web browser as a security architecture. The browser becomes securely extensible in the sense that
   * untrusted Java applets run in seperate protection domains
   * applets can communicate with each other efficiently

01/98 - 05/98  Image Disorientation Auto-Recovery
To detect and adjust the disorientated input images (due to camera motion) for video applications, we proposed an algorithm based on straightline features and tested its efficiency and robustness.
