Using FrontPage 98
Working with Files

Folders View In the Folders View, you can move files into and out of subfolders, much as in the Windows Explorer. When you move files between folders, FrontPage checks the other pages within the current web and, if they link to the file(s) you've just moved, fixes their links. This is why it can sometimes take a while to move pages around.

While FrontPage allows you to move pages without breaking links within a web, keep in mind that if other pages (even on the same server) link to the files you move, their links will break.

Double-clicking a file with the extension ".htm" or ".html" will open it in the FrontPage Editor. Double clicking an image file (.gif or .jpg) will open the image in Image Composer (assuming that program is installed).

Creating
Directories,
Renaming
Files
To create subdirectories within an open web, go to File, then New, then choose Folder. You can rename the folder by right-clicking on its icon in the Folders view and choosing Rename.

To change the name of any individual file in the FrontPage Explorer, simply right-click its icon and choose Rename. Make sure that you leave the .htm or .html extension on HTML files, and that image files retain their proper extensions.

Importing
Pages
You can import pages into your web from a network or local hard drive, or from the web. Before doing this, make sure you are in the subdirectory of your web where you'll want the files.

To bring files saved on a hard drive into your web, select Import from the File menu, then click the "Add File" button in the import window.  Browse to the file location, and select the files you want to import. You can select multiple files in the same directory by control-clicking them. Say OK to the Add File and Import File windows, and the files you've selected will be imported into your web. Limit each import to about 10 files, since importing too many files at once can cause the Explorer program to stop responding.

To import files from a web site, select Import from the File menu, then click the "From Web" button in the import window. Click the "From a World Wide Web site", then type the URL of the page you want to import. You can import files linked to that first page as well, but you'll want to limit the depth in the next window. (Start with a low number, as you can always go back.) Usually you'll want to limit the size to 500 KB, and limit the import to text and image files.

You can also import files into your web by mapping the drive containing your web directory to your local NT or Windows 95 system and copying the files into the appropriate subdirectories. Users inside the CS Department can see Working with CS Web Pages and Servers for more information on our specific environment.
