Permissions

Don't try to control access to a web by setting permissions to a directory or individual files in the NT filesystem. It won't work.

Access to a web is set by going to Permissions under the Tools menu. Permissions cannot be set for individual files in a web. That is, you can't grant someone permission to edit one file while limiting their access to another.

On the users tab, you can add and remove individual users, and control their level of access to the web. You will want to make sure "Everyone has browse access" is selected. There are three levels of access rights:

Administer, author, and browse
Allows the user to edit permissions, edit and add or delete files, and to view files in a web browser.
Author and browse
Allows the user to edit and add or delete files, and to view files in a web browser.
Browse
This permission need not be set for anyone as long as "Everyone has browse access" is selected.

In addition, if you want to save files in your web that won't be accessible to people without at least author permission to your web, you can put them in the _private folder and set its permissions. To do this, right-click on the _private folder and un-check the "Allow files to be browsed" field. This is particularly useful if you have a form that you want to have save information to a confidential file.
