Using FrontPage 98
Tables

Design Tip Tables are useful in web pages, not only for displaying information that we're used to seeing in tables, but also for controlling the layout of elements within a page.
Creating a
Table
Insert Table ButtonTo insert a simple table, you can click on the Insert Table button in the FrontPage Editor toolbar, then drag the cursor over the cells to control the dimensions.
Another alternative is to choose Insert Table in the Table menu. From there, you can control the dimensions and other properties before the table is created.

When you've created a new table, it will probably look like the one above does. There are a number of basic settings you can control by right-clicking within the table and choosing Table Properties. Among these:

  • Border Size: Controls the width of the borders around the cells.
  • Cell Padding: Controls the amount of space between whatever you insert into a cell and the side of the cell.
  • Cell Spacing: Controls the amount of space between cells.
  • Minimum Size: Controls the width and height of the whole table, either as a percent of the viewer's browser window or as a number of pixels.
  • Background: Set a background image or colors.

You can also control the properties of individual cells by selecting a single cell, a group of cells, a row, or a column, right clicking within the selection, and choosing Cell Properties. The most useful settings are:

  • Minimum Size: Controls the width and height of individual cells. If a group of cells is selected, they will all have the same settings.
  • Layout: Controls whether the contents of the cell appear centered, at the top of the cell, left-aligned, etc.
  • Background: Set a background image or colors.

To use a table for placing elements on a page, set the Border Size to zero; though you will see an outline of the table in the FrontPage Editor window, the table borders will be invisible in a browser.

Be careful in trying to control the layout of a page or tables too closely. Different browsers vary in how they display tables, so it's particularly important to check that they make sense in a few different browsers.

Copying a
Table from
Excel
You can copy and paste the contents of an Excel worksheet directly into FrontPage without creating a table first. Just select the cells you want included in Excel, press Control-C, go to your page in the FrontPage Editor, and press Control-V.
