Undergraduate Consulting Awards Date: Tuesday, June 17, 2003. In a ceremony held May 7th, eleven students were honored for their outstanding performance as CS consultants and ugrad TAs. Six seniors were recognized for providing high quality, continuous service (between four and seven semesters each) in specific courses: Osman Ali '03 (CS 100), Shaun Conlon '03 (CS 211), Albert Eskanazi '05 (CS 213), Abhishek Kejriwal '03 (CS 100), Navin Kumar '03 (CS 100), Andrew Marcus '03 (CS 314), and Frances Spalding '03 (CS 312). Daisy Fan nominated Sada Williams '04 for her work in CS 100M, noting that Sada took extra care with her work and was especially mindful of the students' welfare. Dave Schwartz nominated AJ Fink '04, Peter Flynn '04, and Shaun Conlon '03, "The Three Muskateers of the CS 211 staff".  All three ugrad TAs were fundamental to the success of the course.  Finally, Omar Khan '03 was nominated by John Hopcroft for being extremely conscientious and genuinely concerned that CS 381 students learn the course material.  Omar devoted large amounts of time to helping students and was "truly an outstanding ugrad TA". Congratulations and thanks to all for their dedicated support of CS courses!

Graduation Awards 2003 Date: Monday, June 2, 2003. Senior awards were presented as part of the Computer Science Class of 2003 commencement ceremony on Hoy Field on May 25, 2003. Robin Ghi-Hao Lim '03 and Praveen Sethupathy '03 were the recipients of the Jonathan E. Marx Senior Prize, awarded annually for demonstrated leadership, service, and extra-curricular activity. The Alan S. Marx Memorial Prize for Excellence Supporting Undergraduate Education was awarded to Benjamin T. Mathew '03, recognizing his efforts as a consultant and TA for CS 100. The Computer Science Prize for Academic Excellence, given by the CS faculty, was awarded to Omar Habib Khan '03

Announcing Marx Senior Prizes Date: Thursday, April 24, 2003.  Prizes of $500 each will be awarded to two graduating seniors who have majored in computer science.  Winners will be selected based on demonstrated leadership qualities, extra-curricular activities (both in and out of computer science), and for being generally friendly and helpful to classmates and others.  Additionally, all applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade average.  For more information, see prize poster.  Deadline for submission: May 9, 2003.  Details & submission instructions.

New Courses in Computer Graphics Date: Wednesday, April 23, 2003. The Department of Computer Science is pleased to announce the expansion of its offerings in the field of Computer Graphics. Beginning Fall 2003, CS 417 and its associated practicum, CS 418, will be replaced by three new graphics courses. In the fall, Professor Steve Marschner will teach CS 465, Computer Graphics I, an introduction to the principles of two- and three- dimensional graphics. In the spring semester, CS 467, Computer Graphics II, and CS 468, Computer Graphics Practicum, taught by Professor Kavita Bala, will expand upon the principles learned in CS 465. Fall '03 Course Notes Date: Wednesday, March 26, 2003.  The computer science department is pleased to announce some new and exciting courses in its Fall '03 course lineup.  Featured are a new computational biology lecture and practicum and the fall component of our newly revised computer graphics curriculum.  For details about these and other courses, please see Fall '03 Course Information.

Sengers Receives NSF CAREER Award Date: Wednesday, March 26, 2003. CIS professor Phoebe Sengers is a recipient of the NSF Faculty Early Career Award. The NSF CAREER program recognizes and supports the early career-development activities of those teacher-scholars who are most likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century. Professor Sengers' research is in human computer interaction, focusing on problems that bridge cultural issues and technology design. She has been a member of the Faculty of Computing and Information Science (FCIS) since 2001 and has a joint appointment with the Department of Science and Technology Studies. Congratulations Professor Sengers!

Computing and Information Science hosts 6th Annual BOOM technology fair Date: Tuesday March 25, 2003. On display at BOOM 2003 were 50 projects representing four of Cornell's seven undergraduate colleges. This year's projects included many impressive computer games like Jobo the Hobo, Sky Shooter II, Wheelgame, Spaceman Bob, Glorious Age, and Animal Quest. Students also showed off the Course Management System(CMS), a program designed by computer science students and currently used by the CS Department in the handling of homework submissions and online grade distribution. Also, returning to this years' fair was the Ithaca High School, BorgWarner, and Cornell University FIRST Robotics' team. The team competes annually in the national FIRST Robotics competition. 

BOOM 2003 was sponsored by Microsoft and Credit Suisse First Boston.

Gehrke Receives Sloan Fellowship Date: Monday, March 3, 2003. Professor Johannes Gehrke has recently been named as a 2003 Sloan Research Fellow. The Sloan Research Fellowships were created in 1955 to recognize, support and encourage young faculty, often in their first appointments. Approximately 100 fellowships are awarded annually in seven fields: chemistry, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, and physics. Congratulations to Professor Gehrke!

Fred Schneider awarded honorary Doctor of Sciences degree Date: Tuesday, February 11, 2003. Professor Fred Schneider has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Sciences degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK). Past recipients include Maurice Wilkes, T.H. (Tommy) Flowers, W.C. Two Cornell entries win 2002 IBM Linux Scholar Challenge Contest Date Date: Tuesday, February 4, 2003. Two groups of Cornell students are among the 20 winning entries in the 2002 IBM Linux Scholar Challenge contest. Warren Wong '04 developed an extensible "Perfmon for Linux" application. This was part of a CS 490, Independent Research, with Professor Jeanna Matthews, in Fall 2002. Brian Kowolowski '03, Hubert Chao '02, Jeffrey Vinocur '02 and Jed Liu '01, MEng 02' implemented name-based virtual hosting support to TCP in the Linux Kernel. This work was done in the context of Prof. Matthews' Spring 2002 CS 519 class, Computer Networks. Each winning entry receives an IBM Think pad.
