Technical Support Engineer

Nortel Netoworks, Boston

Currently, I work in the Technical Solutions Center at Nortel Networks, formerly Bay Networks. I have been based in the Boston area for almost six years. I support the Baystack Instant Internet product, which acts as a Router/Proxy Server/Firewall for small companies. I interact with System Administrator, Consultants, and Resellers connecting companies to the Internet. As a technical support engineer, I am on the phone constantly involved with problem solving, account management, and damage control. I enjoy working on the phones and supporting customers. There is no programming involved and interacting with customers is my primary focus. My hours are a very regular eight-hour day. There is no such thing as all-nighters, 80 workweeks, or travel in my position. My schedule allows me time to pursue a Master’s degree in the evenings. Furthermore, Nortel Networks provides plenty of training and opportunities to work with other products in the Routers, Switches, and Network Management groups, otherwise I can easily become a systems engineer.

At Cornell, I chose the Computer Science major, because I had been programming for over five years before entering college with my Apple IIe. In addition, the Computer Science major earns a tremendous amount of respect regardless of your profession. After graduation, I was not really interested in programming, I wanted to get involved with networking. Before Nortel Networks, my quest led me to a startup in Massachusetts where I worked as a system engineer. Down the road, I plan on attending law school to take advantage of my computer background and concentrate in patent law.

Thanks,
