Andersen Consulting

After graduating from Cornell University in May ’98, with a BA in computer science, I started as an Analyst in the Technology Competency Group at Andersen Consulting. I have been with Andersen Consulting for about 4 months and I am currently staffed on a financial services project in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The purpose of the project is to develop an Internet based application that will be used by internal customer service representatives. We are using a variety of technologies ranging from JavaScript, Visual Basic, C, Internet Explorer 4.0, NT Server, and SQL Server. The project is in a rather early stage right now, so I am getting the opportunity to see the full development lifecycle; from analyzing the business requirements to eventually rolling-out the application.

I feel my computer science background is vital to my role as a systems architect. Although all the technologies I am currently using may not directly match those I learned and used at Cornell, the principles are still the same.

On my project, Andesen Consulting is tightly integrated within client teams. You will find Andersen Consulting consultants working side-by-side with the client professionals on a daily basis. One of the most important experiences Cornell provided me was working in a team environment. No matter where you are within Andersen Consulting, the odds are you will be working within a team.

As for the hours, it is difficult to generalize. As a rule of thumb, I stay as long as I need to get my work done. If I can finish my work early, I can also leave early. The same applies to staying late. Policies regarding flybacks vary depending on your home and assignment location, but all Andersen Consulting professionals on my project have the option of flying to their home offices for the weekend. I generally fly back to New York on Friday afternoons, and return Monday mornings, which is nice because it allows for a full weekend at home. And every once in a while I decide stay in Florida and enjoy a relaxing sunny weekend.

Overall, what I find most interesting about working at Andersen Consulting is having the opportunity to design and implement high-tech solutions to business processes. Not only do I have the opportunity to learn new technologies, but I also learn how to solve business problems.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line.

Thanks,

Nick Nemati
