COM S 685
: The Structure of Information Networks.  [NEW]

4 credits.  Prerequisite: COM S 482.  Meeting Time:  MWF 1:25-2:15.

Information networks such as the World Wide Web are characterized by the interplay between heterogeneous content and a complex underlying link structure.  This course covers recent research on algorithms for analyzing such networks and models that abstract their basic properties.  Topics include combinatorial and probabilistic techniques for link analysis, centralized and decentralized search algorithms, generative models for networks, and connections with work in the areas of social networks and citation analysis.

COM S 750: Evolutionary Computation and Design Automation (also MAE 650).  [NEW]

4 credits variable.  Prerequisite: programming experience or permission of instructor.  Meeting Time: MW 2:55-4:10pm.

Covers advanced topics in evolutionary algorithms and their application to computational design. The course provides insight to a variety of evolutionary computation paradigms, as well as governing dynamics of co-evolution, arms races, and symbiosis. Topics include artificial life, evolutionary robotics, and applications in a variety of domains in engineering, science, and art. The course is suitable for students interested in computational techniques for addressing open-ended design problems computational models of evolutionary discovery.  The course will be comprised of lectures, paper readings, and discussions.  Grading based on critical paper reviews and individual projects.

COM S 751: Media Research and Critical Design (also CIS 751).   [NEW]

4 credits.  Prerequisite: Graduate standing in computer science or equivalent ability to read technical research papers. Contact instructor in case of doubt.  Meeting Time/Location: Tuesday 6:30-7:45pm in Hollister 312 and Friday 1:25-2:15 in Rhodes 484.

Media research practices which incorporate cultural criticism into technology design. Topics include tangible media, ubiquitous computing, speculative design, and interactive narrative. Computer science content draws on interactive art, cultural studies, and interaction design.
